The 1984 reform introduced the possibility Xtracab two-row extended cab. There was also a model for the injection, the 22R-E. Two diesel engines were also offered, the 2L and the turbocharged 2L-T. Diesel engines have been abandoned in the United States after 1986 model year, this was due to expectations of higher returns to customers and the wide availability of cheap gasoline. The following year saw the introduction a turbo option, the 22R-TE. The front axle was changed to the strong independent front suspension and torsion bar setup in the 4×4 model in 1986 and optional automatic front locking hubs and an electronic transfer case has also been added. A V6 engine was introduced in 1988.

recreational vehicles (RV) were built in a Toyota truck chassis from Toyota Chinook introduction in 1977, a standard framework until 1993, when the last Winnebago and national coaches have been completed in his last picture in 1992. Since then, a series of articles that have used the chassis of Toyota's small trucks built small houses in the Class C motor, including Chinook, RBR, New Horizons, the coachman, Huntsman, national (Under the names of the dolphins and Seabreaze), Winnebago Industries (under the Itasca and Winnebago name), and Gardner Pacific (under the name Sunrader). Since 1986, manufacturers RV have started using the heaviest Toyota 1 ton cab and chassis.
Reputation
The Hilux has gained a reputation for exceptional strength and reliability, even when used intensively supported and / or abuse, and is often called "the indestructible car." This has been reinforced by the BBC Top Gear show car, when a 1988 Hilux with 190,000 miles (308,000 kilometers) to the odometer has been the subject of extraordinary violence (Series 3, episodes 5 and 6). It was taking them to download a flight of stairs, scraping down the buildings, smashing his head against a tree, being carried away by the sea and completely submerged, led by a garden shed a caravan on it, hitting it with a wrecking ball, the establishment of the cab and bed area on fire, and finally placing it on top of a block of 240 feet (73 m) apartment, which was then destroyed by controlled demolition. Although it has now suffers from serious structural damage, the truck was still running after being repaired without spare parts and tools for typical equipment is the tool box of a car, such as screwdrivers, oil motor, and a key, however, was used WD40 to get the engine running after being recovered from the sea Hilux currently resides as one of the decorations in the background Top Gear studio.
In the 2006 series (series 8, episode 3), a Hilux was chosen by Jeremy Clarkson as his platform to create an amphibious vehicle. With help, Clarkson rigged the truck with a massive outboard motor, ironically made by Honda and the steering in the truck. The truck, redubbed the Toybota "was driven by Clarkson over several miles by road and two miles (3 km) across open water, before dumping during a fast corner. Once recovered, the vehicle has been transferred back to the Top Gear Studio, where some said that Clarkson would be the only one capable of driving the car home because he was the indestructible Hilux. However, Clarkson could not get the Hilux started which led to his co-organizers believe that Clarkson had finally destroyed the "indestructible." In the 2007 series (Series 10, Episode 2) Nissan Truck Clarkson chose, instead of a Hilux in defiance of frog second, successfully crossed the English Channel in the vehicle.
In 2007, Top Gear has taken a special program in which Clarkson and James May raced a 2005 model Hilux to the magnetic North Pole in 1996 in northern Canada against Richard Hammond using a dog sled. The race, known as the Hilux Arctic Challenge, the truck made the first car to reach the magnetic North Pole.
Outside television, these vehicles have been known for more than 300,000 miles (~ 500.000 km) with regular maintenance. It is also notorious to be used as an improvised fighting vehicle "technical militias and" irregular military forces, especially in Third World conflicts. Toyota War between Libya and Chad was so named because of the Hilux trucks that use of the Chad Army light cavalry. These vehicles have also been used in war in Iraq from improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The militias have been known to give up the vehicle after Soviet missiles and equipment. The war saw the use Toyota Hilux as a motor vehicle that acts as a tug of planes and tanks of attraction for the T-62 heavy tank. There are currently 37 customized Hilux used Liberation People's Army in southern China.
