The Hilux started production in March 1968 RN10 as the short wheelbase with a 1.5L engine This became a 1.6L I4 engine in February 1971.

In April 1969, a long wheelbase version was added to the range. The short wheelbase version has also continued in production during many years. The long wheelbase version has not sold in North America until 1972.
Despite the name "Hilux", is a very luxurious vehicle Stout. Hilux has been designed and assembled by Hino Motors to increase briska Hino, briska and Stout or replaced in some markets. In mid-1972, the 1973 Hilux was released as the RN20. A comfortable interior exterior updates have been clarified. A 7.5 ft (2.3 m) long bed "was optional for the first time in North America even if it had been available worldwide since April 1969.

In North America, the Hilux has been the use of four wheel drive. She had a solid front axle and the suspension of the leaf. In 1981, a development agreement was established between Toyota vehicles, Winnebago Industries and two customizers replacement. This would allow Toyota to enter the SUV market in North America. Towards the end of the production cycle SR5 (1983 model year), Toyota has introduced the luxury Mojave for the U.S. market as a production Limited (3,500) model with options not available in other Toyota pickups. List price U.S. $ 8,308, offered bucket seats, radio multiplex two speakers Chrome front and rear bumper, and without the Toyota logo on the grille or rear door. The 1984 reform introduced the possibility Xtracab two-row extended cab. There was also a model for the injection, the 22R-E. Two diesel engines were also offered, the 2L and the turbocharged 2L-T. The Hilux in South America was produced in Colombia from 1998 to 2005, with sofas (2.7 cc petrol engines), sold and exported to (Venezuela and Ecuador, where the only 2WD Chassis Cab / Long Bed is called Stout II). Facelift
Tacoma's name comes from a word for volcano Tahoma Lushootseed Cascade Mountains, known as Mount Rainier in English, which is visible from Tacoma, Washington, USA.
The Tacoma frame differs from the structure Hilux, even if the two seem to each other out. Both the Tacoma and Hilux variants are sold in Mexico.

Both the Tacoma and the Hilux were updated in 2005. The Tacoma was based on the new Land Cruiser Prado chassis, while the Hilux rides on an updated version the framework of the ladder is in previous versions. Facelift
A facelifted version of the Hilux has been unveiled Toyota dealers in Malaysia, UMW Toyota Motor, in August 2008. Toyota has launched a facelift left hand drive Hilux Vigo in August 2008, while the right-hand drive Facelifted Hilux Vigo 2009 model was released in September 2008. The facelifted models have been introduced in the Philippines in October 2008.
Toyota has also introduced a system rear access called Smart Cab "to replace all Xtra Cab models Class E and G. Smart cab models are only for the domestic market in Thailand.

Reputation

In 2007, Top Gear has taken a special program in which Clarkson and James May raced a 2005 model Hilux to the magnetic North Pole in 1996 in northern Canada against Richard Hammond using a dog sled. The race, known as the Hilux Arctic Challenge, the truck made the first car to reach the magnetic North Pole.
Outside television, these vehicles have been known for more than 300,000 miles (~ 500.000 km) with regular maintenance. It is also notorious to be used as an improvised fighting vehicle "technical militias and" irregular military forces, especially in Third World conflicts.
