Set Bag Ages
How much technology has gone into modern player’s iron sets?
I learned the game and have always played with very old clubs. This past summer was the first time I ever had a metal driver in the bag. All my irons have always been old muscle-back blades but I would like to buy some new clubs. Has anything changed with blades today or would my old clubs be just about the same, other than the age? Would the technology in player’s irons be any help? Or is all the helpful technology really in the improvement irons?
If you have never replaced the shafts, there are lighter, more consistent (steel) shafts available that will improve the consistency, playability, and possibly distance of your old clubs.
Although musclebacks have changed the least of any style of clubs, there have been improvements over the years. Weight distribution is better (more towards the edges), manufacturing processes have improved so they should be more consistently made, the ’sweet spot’ is generally larger (although still small; they’re still blades) and most people I know feel that newer blade clubs have better overall feel than older clubs.
Overall, I think you probably would enjoy a new set of the right clubs. There are actually quite a few options out there in the muscleback style, so you should be able to pick out a set that you really, really like. Do your homework, and try literally EVERY club you can get your hands on, since blade players are generally the most discerning and picky types of players.
