How far off center is a golf ball if it goes 100 yards from the tee and is struck 1 degree off center?
My golf instructor claims that if I hit a ball 100 yards from the tee and is struck 1 degree off center the ball will be 10 yards from the center line. It has been along time since I did trigonometry but my calculations show that for every 100 yards the ball will be off 1.74 yards. Am I correct?
If the drive is 100 yards, call that AB.
BC will also be 100, and we need to find AC.
Construct a line from angle B to the midpoint of AC and call that line BD.
So the sin ABD = AD/AB.
.0087 = AD/100.
AD = .87
AC = 2X AD = 1.74
Am I correct?
By by the way he also says that hitting into a say 10 mph wind will impede the carry more than a following wind of the same wind speed. Conceptually this makes no sense to me. What do you think besides the fact that it is a good thing he is a golf teacher and not math?
From the tee to the 100 yard mark is “adjacent” and from the 100 yard mark to where the ball landed is “opposite”. You know the adjacent and you want to find out the opposite. Since you hit the ball an angle of 1 degree of we use the tangent of 1 (tangent is opposite over adjacent). So Tan1=X/100 When you cross multiply you end up with Tan1×100 = X. When you simplify you get that X=15.7 feet. So you hit the ball roughly 15.7 feet off from the original target. As for the wind he would be correct.
Other than that, you both need some work with your Trig but he definitely should not be a math teacher
