El Paso – Part 2

Silly me

With that in mind, here's my theory and my tone essentials:

  • Record companies invest in truly creative acts (such as Pink Floyd and The Doors) that produce quality products, then generate billions of dollars. This type Music becomes the industry standard for the genre Rock as well as for generations of rock fans.
  • The aforementioned "Rules" that easily generates money year after year, the music industry has the ability to concentrate on developing new artists. However, rarely operates outside generators to test the recipes of the past.
  • In the '80s, the industry explode when returns change of LP to CD formats. The lesson that the leaders? "The more I relax, the more money I make!"
  • Then majors are fat and lazy, and well-fed pigeons in a park. They forget their basic needs and R values to focus only on the ease of money in the short term. In part, this, spending money on marketing and advertising (Remember, Vanilla Ice, and Millie Vanilli CMC Music Factory?) It was easier for the company to scrap them pedal and had a jam in the throat of consumers. creatively speaking, they were interested only in music has been a good product price.
  • Meanwhile, the industry does not include groups like Dave Matthews and Phish. These bands generate millions of dollars money for the shows that circumvents the record company and goes directly into the pockets of artists.
  • This change of "game" of product marketing music 'music and cheap products can work for a while, but never higher than sales of music based on talent and culture of musicians and songwriters like Dylan, Elvis, The Beatles, U2, The Eagles, AC / DC and other artists standard.
  • This new process as rigid arms 30 and more persons, who have since found solace in country music "again.

Hey, but I'm the guy background did nothing. Silly me.

Meat and potatoes

The ground seemed to me simple. Here are my notes were:

  • Back to the classic A & R through Scouting practices and cultivate talent of artists and bands in the Classic Rock N Roll 'Gender. In other words, follow the same process that produced the Dead, Lynard Skynard, Cream, Buffalo Springfield, YES, etc..
  • This cohort could lead to the "new" rules of rock music.
  • Work the development of his music for a long period of time (Think of many albums by Bonnie Raitt product before success). In other words, stick to the artist and to allow a certain degree of failure.
  • My model Rock music is proposed 70's and 80's. My expectation is that the songs of these newer groups that meet elderly, for example, AC / DC fan, Rock classic radio and is friendly. In fact, these stations could play these new songs today amongthe many other classics now on your list of subjects.

(The only band I can think of that even was on the verge of what I describe a The Black Crows. It was brilliant when they collaborated Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. I think that appeals to listeners disenfranchised I mentioned before, the conversion of the Black Crows fans forever. All he did was take the pipeline Classic Rock.)

  • Finally, the design field, I want to say that the business model and put implemented to the record company.

To prove a point

It seems that radio formats through cycles fairly quickly. Jazz turns to soft rock station overnight. Lite FM station at 24 hours of sports. The only kind that is consistent is Classic Rock. For example, try the following on your next trip: Passing stations notice of the variety in each radio market. Now, find the classic rock station in every market. I guarantee that this will be visible on the dial and easy to adjust "to me, this means that many people are listening and there is high demand. Rarely hear a new song of a new group. You can also see the classic rock station play the same thing over and over again. As for my field, this means that the company had abandoned a large market. As a grocery store selling the same year after year the line food, because people get used to. Instead, why not give them something and improved "again, and still sell the classics? This Once the new product line, even to be the basis for the future!

Do not let the door …

In preparation for my next meeting, I asked RCA to send me information and recent press releases. Soon, a package arrived containing recordings of newly signed bands, the list of existing circuits, and distribution projects. I studied and listened. These days, the RCA has been adrift and apparently had no interest in Rock 'N' Roll. I was on a year ago and personally CAR the band felt that the company had fallen asleep at the wheel. The CD in the package is disappointing. In Overall, it appears that the label was too busy following the trends instead of creating them.

The day of my meeting, I received a warm welcome the staff of the RCA. A hearing was interrupted, and the A & R staff were crushed approx. There were persistent suits outside the conference room in a lively discussion. Bob Jamieson came and introduced himself and asked me to wait a few minutes. An hour later, I was escorted to his office and left myself a little. It is then studied photos and memories to get an idea of man to present my business proposal. He eventually returned and sat down to talk.

I started with my theory of a "New" Rock 'N' Roll meet and a poor market. I spared no detail of the heart and speaks as if we were at Happy Hour in the third round. As my Pitch progressed, Bob became distracted by phone calls, impromptu meetings and paperwork. Also came and talked to his secretary for several minutes. When he returned, had a copy of the original letter I sent them, and shave around it. It was obvious that he had read. It also appeared that he had no idea who I was and What I desperately wanted to meet him. Also, I do not feel that this type know much about music. I refer to the bands or songs to prove a point and waited to "Yes, I know what you mean!" type of response. Instead, Bob became nervous and restless. In ten minutes, made a polite apology and we called the meeting to an end. It looked like a man who had been tortured by the nonsense about the music of a musician no less. The horror!

… You have reached the end!

As was accompanied by his office, I saw the red face his secretary, Claudette, walking by his office. She looked the other way when she thanked him for inviting me. The expression on his face told me that a real milling your boss for the establishment of this meeting. She was in the shit. I felt like in the movie Jerry Maguire, the day after delivering his famous mission statement. Ashamed and humiliated evil passions of my ingenuity. I was floating in the water in another world and the realization I had no idea how it worked. "You know, you would a great A & R Guy "he said as he waited for the elevator." It's just that we are not hiring anyone right now. "Wow, I thought, "Thanks for giving me the job scenario." I went in his desire to restore Rock 'N' Roll to his rightful throne. I went to find my dignity.

After the story

Bob Jamieson got in touch a little later and asked me to meet an A & R of its kind. Perhaps he had an opportunity to reflect on our meeting and my ideas. I took the meeting. I forget the name of the boy, but just remember few minutes, he had to suppress a yawn. After that, there were further discussions or meetings with the RCA.

In retrospect, I think things may have for me anyway. Thinking outside the box for my "pitch" was worth it, and I did it again since then. From a young age, I thought it would be best at what you do. That is what really counts. It is a noble mission, but not much remains of this statement. It is his roommate at Yale or the University of New York, personal relationships with their neighbors in Great Neck Scarsdale, the charity of your family support your handicap on the golf course, the size of its trust fund, his brothers Wall Street fraternity of Associates of your father, the wife of his banker, or the Council that his mother chairs. I never had any of these assets. "Instead, after CAR my meeting I could feel the heel loafer in my front while pushing the boat was gone.

A valuable lesson

The lesson I learned was: Assess, recognize, go ahead. Sometimes things work, sometimes do not. Sometimes it is given its position in life on a plate, and sometimes, no matter how hard you try, never achieve their dreams and goals. If so, do not do much about it, just go to the next task. But is important that you continue to take place. do the hard work and not worry too much about the results. Two years later, in a strange Suddenly, I became an elementary school teacher in the public school system in New York. Somehow, I felt like I had missed a call. Education and my place as the hand. In other words, because of my job as a teacher, my music career has never been better. Finally, I was able to say "no" to concerts inferior or underpay. In addition, my work one time in the middle suddenly, making my time more precious to me and my clients. Surprisingly, leaving my old way of life was as simple as dropping a burning coal. Assess, recognize, go ahead.
