1. Evaluate the validity of the following arguments:
A]
Premise: All 20th-century US presidents were men.
Premise: Bill Clinton is a man.
Conclusion: Bill Clinton was a 20th-century president.
B]
Premise: If Jones buys a new car, then he will not purchase a new set of golf clubs.
Premise: If Jones buys a new set of golf clubs, then he will not purchase his wife a birthday present.
Premise: Jones purchased his wife a birthday present.
Conclusion: Jones did not purchase a new car.
PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS. I NEED TO BE 100% sure
I don’t know exactly how to evaluate validity of statements, but the first statement is not valid at all based on the premise. If the second premise were Bill Clinton was a 20th century US president then we could logically conclude from the first premise that Bill Clinton was a man. But the first premise does not imply just because you are a man then you are a 20th century president. I would disagree strongly with those above that say A is valid. The know Bill Clinton was a President and are basing their answers on that.
For the second, follow the logic backwards using contrapositives and see where it takes you. Just a thought…
The second doesn’t make sense because the contrapositive of a conditional statement has the same truth tables as the conditional statement itself, but the converse (what you get if you follow the contrapositive of the 2nd premise) of the first primise (any conditional premise) is not neccesarily true.
Using the notation below…
b) let C = buy a new car, G = golf clubs, W = wife present
C –> ~G
G–> ~W
We are given W.
Since G –> ~W
then W –> ~G is true.
Now consider ~G.
We are told C –> ~G.
~G –> C is the converse of the above statement. Converses of true statements are not always true. So we can’t be certain C can be implied from W.
