Iron Graphite Stiff
Is mixing irons a bad idea? stiff graphite and steel?

Both shafts are pretty stiff, but I broke the heads off on a couple of my wilson ultra 432’s w/ graphite shafts, so i bought a partial set of wilson profile power w/ steel shafts. I’m using most of the profile clubs and two of the 432 (3 and 6 irons). i don’t have a 4 iron, but have a 4 hybrid and a fairway driver w/ a big bertha steelhead plus.

I’m kind of a golf newbie, so is this set sufficient? Is it suitable for a high handicap player like me? Is it going to throw off my swing to use different kinds of clubs (not from the same set- like mixed irons and woods)?

While the general rule of thumb is to have a matching set, I’ve long thought this is a bit of an over-stated premise for the average golfer. Especially when you factor in that the static weight of any particular club head (using, say, a 6iron for example) are relatively exactly the same regardless the manufacturer. Now, when you get into mixing and matching together a set comprised of different shafts it can get a bit trickier since there can be quite a bit of difference in their weights and flexes – BUT, ultimately, you being new and not having high expectations someone likely could allow you to use one of the best sets on the market and you wouldn’t play any better.

People also forget that Notah Begay played his entire junior and amatuer career, including when he was a teammate of Tiger’s when they battled for No.1 status at Stanford, with a mixed bag set of clubs (including 3 different manufacturer’s irons) – and played them quite well, and only ever got his first “matched set” when he turned pro.
