HD Tv goes blurry when watching sports?
I have a 1080 LG HD tv. When watching sports on free to air channels, the ball goes blurry. It looks almost like it is three balls – with a shadow of the ball on either side of the main ball. Is this normal. It happens with golf, cricket, soccer and football when the ball is hit in the air. Is this normal?
I also have it connected to my PS3. The same thing was happening when playing FIFA 09, but I turned off the motion flow and it worked fine. It seemed counter intuitive to me.
What you have experienced with your TV is called Triple Ball Effect (TBE). TBE is a common artifact produced by the video co-processor that creates the interpreted frames of the 100 Hz/120 Hz motion flow feature in your LCD HDTV.
NO 100 Hz/120 Hz refresh rate feature is immune to producing artifacts. They all utilize a processor that can and does get overwhelmed with live sporting scenes and certain movie scenes. When overwhelmed, they produce artifacts such as TBE, halos (incomplete processing of the background around the moving object(s)) and bursts of erratic motion. The latter is particularly interesting because the marketing for 100 Hz/120 Hz often times refers to this feature as smooth motion. In my humble opinion, the feature is expensive and of dubious benefit. I prefer to watch my sports on a plasma HDTV because I get NO artifacts and more detail than any LCD HDTV can deliver.
