Copper Plate Magnetic

MAPPING MAGNETIC FIELDS.. 1. explain clearly why the iron filings line up in a magnetic field.?
Would copper filings be equally satisfactory? Why is it desirable to tap the glass plates? Why it is preferable to use very few filings?
2.Do lines of force portray position where the poles on unit pole is everywhere the same? If not, what do lines of force represent?
3. A magnet is placed along the east-west direction in the earth’s magnetic field. Locate any neutral points.
Copper is not effected by magnetic force so it cannot be used to detect or “map” a magnetic field. Iron does experience a force in a magnetic field and can be used to map magnetic lines of force. You tap on the glass to jar the iron particles so they will be free to move in line with the magnetic fields. More filings than necessary will restrict movement and prevent the most accurate mapping.
2 The lines of particles reveal the presence and direction of magnetic field intensity. The iron is attracted to the magnet and if the field weren’t there, the iron would not be there.
3. The earth’s magnetic field is north to south so placing another magnet at right angles to that field will result in points where the two fields cancel out resulting in magnetic field intensity of zero. Iron filings will not be attracted to those locations. You might have to gently fan the filings so that only those adhering to the magnetic force will remain.
