Complete Golf Set
What clubs make up a complete golf set? What other “stuff” is needed?
I’m trying to figure out what to buy my husband for a golf-themed birthday. He’s got a set of clubs that were custom made for his father and he likes that brand (no idea who it is!). I just need to figure out what clubs I should be getting him. Well, he’s getting a gift cert. for specific clubs. What other things can I get him for his golf bag. Obviously balls and tees but I’m clueless about anything else!!! PLEASE HELP!!!
I won’t be picking his brand or anything. I just want to know what TYPE of clubs. You know, 3-wood, driver, wedge, etc. Thanks.
A driver, a putter, and 12 others in between.
Get a look at his bag and see what he’s carrying now and what he likes. Your choices are woods numbered 2 through infinity, irons numbered 1 through 9, and any number of wedges.
Most average golfers carry (keeping to a 14 club limit) the putter, Driver, 3 wood, 4 wood, 5 wood,
3-9 iron, a pitching wedge and a sand wedge.
Some hit woods easier than long irons, so they sub a 7 wood for a 3 iron. A lot may forsake a 3 or 4 wood wood for an extra wedge at a different loft.
There’s no “set” set. All depends on what he’s comfortable with.
A great bag stuffer would be a Gore-Tex rainsuit. Or at least a Gore-Tex top. They’re great in the rain. And Foot-Joy makes a GREAT set of rain gloves that are the best I’ve seen at letting you keep a grip on a soaking wet golf club. The Gore-Tex’ll be expensive, the gloves are around $15-20.
P.S. Don’t get him “a” golf lesson. A series of them or none at all. I think it was Bob Toski who charged $200 for five lessons and $2,000.00 for one way back when (if you expect a miracle, you should expect to pay for it).
