Haruki Murakami and Japanese literature? Questions …?
After seeing one of his autobiographical essay in the New Yorker a few days ago, I immediately ran to the library and took Murakami "after the earthquake," a collection of his stories. His writing is really fascinating, I'm enjoying my reading. I would like to learn more about their work and the other major Japanese literature, both modern and classic. I have always been fascinated by Japanese culture and would interested in spending some time this summer to really delve into literature.
I am not an expert on Japanese literature, but I can live with some things you'd like (Incidentally, Mainichi Daily website has carried out a series of interviews with Murakami in their influences and the process of writing orders very interesting week, its main influences were Fitzgerald and Capote!). I am a big fan of Shusaku Endo. Several of his books focus on the conflicts of the Japanese Christians, or the distraction of the Japanese when presented with a Christian worldview. I recommend "The Samurai" and especially "Silence." Hitomi Kanehara is a young writer who "Snakes Earrings and "raised a noise when it was published some years ago. Very dark and disturbing, this is a Japanese underworld more gay-jin never see again. Natsuo Kirino much used the same themes in his novels, three of which were published in the United States, "Out" "Grotesque" and "The Real World." This is indeed the order in which I recommend, with "Out" being the best. Lafcadio Hearn is not Japanese, but he was one of the few Westerners who have assimilated to the Japanese culture a lot and has been named Japan's honor, he wrote pages and pages about Japanese culture in the 19th century and collected dozens of stories. "Kwaidan" a storybook Horror is probably his more popular. Mishima Yukio was a writer who has covered many topics, including developments in the cultural and orientation sexual, but is best known for his spectacular suicide in recent years-1960's traditional commit seppuku. "Confessions of a Mask" is great but I also recommend "Mishima's sword," an attempt to find the infamous weapon that single use. I hope that is just the beginning. Happy reading!
