Bertha Diablo Hybrid

How much difference is there between the 2004 Callaway Big Bertha Irons, and the 2010 Diablo Edge Irons?
I’ve heard that there has been a lot of technology improvement in the golf Irons, drivers, and hybrids over the last 6 years. How much of that is marketing, and how much of that is REAL?
I’ve read reviews that claim that every year the irons get more forgiving, and hit the ball farther… but come on, isn’t that just marketing BS?
The only technology “improvements” are strengthening the lofts (a 29* 6 iron instead of 31*, for instance) and an increase in overall club lengths. This, in theory, makes for longer shots (roughly 2-3* per loft- nothing to sneeze at)… but it also makes for a loss of accuracy (what irons are designed for in the first place). Of course, these tests are done on robots- so, unless you’re a cyborg, you won’t have the ability to make the same swing over and over and over again… but don’t feel bad- not even PGA pros (including Tiger Woods) can, either.
If there’s anything truly significant, I feel it’s the addition of tungsten to the sole of the iron’s head. Tungsten is a very heavy metal, so adding it to the sole will lower the club’s center of gravity, which will help golfer’s with not-so-good swings get the ball in the air. If you have above average to very good ball-striking ability, there isn’t really anything that will improve your game other than a custom fitting.
There is a way to make them more forgiving, but it makes the clubs unsightly. Thickening the sole, thickening the topline and having a huge, protruding cavity piece (like the yellow… thing… on the back of Nike’s SuMo irons) can help. But usually, the “technology” is so invading to the eye that a there’s a lack of confidence. Not only that, a poor swing will render poor results, regardless of what “technology” is present. There’s no “magic cure-alls” in golf.
